Helicopter flights restricted in Everest region
The Air Service Operators Association of Nepal has indefinitely suspended helicopter flights in the Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality, including Sagarmatha National Park, citing threats and obstruction from local groups. A statement by Pratapjung Pandey, Vice President of the association revealed that locals warned of arresting pilots if flights continued without ensuring safety.
Commercial flights to Lukla have also been stopped, with airlines apologizing for the inconvenience caused to passengers. The decision follows mounting complaints of noise pollution, environmental damage, and its negative impact on local trade and employment.
The Everest National Park Office has warned that violations of the directive would breach conservation laws, allowing flights only with specific permissions and recommendations.
Helicopters are restricted from transporting cargo beyond Pangboche, forcing businesses to rely on porters and animals. In 2024, over 109,000 tourists visited the Khumbu region via 44,859 flights, highlighting the ban’s significant impact on tourism and trade.
