Nepal drafts National AI Policy, seeks public input
Kathmandu, Nepal – The Nepali government has taken a significant step towards regulating and promoting artificial intelligence (AI) by releasing the National AI Policy 2081 draft. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MoCIT) seeks public feedback on the draft before its finalization.
The proposed policy focuses on responsible AI development, ethical use, and adherence to international standards. A key element is the creation of several new bodies, including an AI Regulatory Council, a National AI Center, and AI Excellence Centers. The National AI Center would be the core institution, overseeing AI research, development, and implementation. The Regulatory Council, chaired by the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, would focus on ethical considerations and international alignment.
The draft policy also emphasizes the need for robust digital infrastructure, including expanded 5G and fiber optic networks, and the establishment of data centers. It also proposes incentives for AI startups and investment opportunities.
The MoCIT has invited public feedback on the draft policy. Following the feedback period, the policy will be revised and submitted to the Cabinet for final approval. The finalized policy will provide a framework for AI governance and innovation in Nepal.
