Nepal-China Relations Celebrate 70 Years of Friendship and Practical Cooperation
Kathmandu – Nepal recently marked the 70th anniversary of its diplomatic relations with China with a grand closing ceremony in Kathmandu, celebrating decades of cooperation and shared achievements. The milestone reflects a longstanding partnership that spans economic, cultural, educational, and social dimensions, while underscoring the practical benefits that bilateral cooperation has brought to both nations. The event emphasized how Nepal-China relations have evolved from formal diplomacy to deep-rooted people-to-people connections, creating a solid foundation for future collaboration.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Indira Ranamagar, highlighted the significance of Nepal-China relations, calling China not just a friendly neighbor but a strategic partner and fellow developing country. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the year-long celebrations, she noted that the bilateral relationship has grown diverse and multifaceted, encompassing trade, investment, infrastructure, connectivity, culture, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

“Our cooperation with China has consistently demonstrated mutual respect, trust, and shared development goals,” Ranamagar stated. She emphasized that while formal diplomatic channels have facilitated strategic cooperation, there is a growing need to strengthen grassroots-level interactions and cultural ties. According to her, the 70th anniversary represents both an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past and a chance to look forward with hope toward deeper collaboration in the coming decades.
Ranamagar also acknowledged China’s significant contributions to Nepal’s development endeavors, particularly in areas of infrastructure, technical assistance, and investment projects. Representing China at the event, Zhou Pan, Chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu, stressed that civilizational and cultural exchanges are key to sustaining the friendship between the two countries. He noted that mutual understanding and affinity, cultivated through people-to-people and cultural interactions, have been instrumental in advancing bilateral cooperation.

Zhou highlighted that high-level political exchanges have maintained strong momentum over the years, consolidating political trust and fostering collaboration on shared interests. “Political mutual trust has been further consolidated, and both countries firmly support each other’s efforts to safeguard core interests,” he remarked. He also emphasized that China’s newly unveiled 15th Five-Year Plan aligns closely with Nepal’s national development strategy, creating opportunities for joint projects and practical cooperation in sectors such as economy, trade, infrastructure, agriculture, poverty alleviation, youth development, and governance.
“Practical cooperation in economy and trade has already yielded tangible results,” Zhou added. “People-to-people and cultural exchanges have grown closer, small livelihood projects have positively impacted communities, and youth programs have strengthened mutual affection. Through these concrete actions, Nepal and China demonstrate the enduring closeness of our nations.”
