CAN Federation, NMDA Forge Strategic Alliance to Strengthen Nepal’s Mobile Industry and Combat Grey Market
Kathmandu – Nepal’s two leading umbrella organizations in the information technology and mobile business sectors — the Computer Association of Nepal Federation (CAN Federation) and the Nepal Mobile Distributors Association (NMDA) — have initiated a strategic institutional collaboration aimed at fostering the growth of Nepal’s mobile industry and addressing key challenges facing the sector.
A significant Institutional Alliance Discussion Meeting was held on Sunday (Jestha 17) at the CAN Federation’s central office in Khusibu, Kathmandu, where senior leadership from both organizations came together for high-level discussions.
Focus on Mobile Ecosystem Reform and Policy Advocacy
The meeting primarily focused on addressing critical issues affecting Nepal’s mobile sector, including policy ambiguity, the growing challenge of unauthorized mobile imports through grey markets, and the need for stronger regulation of the overall hardware and mobile ecosystem.
CAN Federation Acting President Chiranjivi Adhikari and NMDA President Raghu Tripathi jointly expressed their commitment to strengthening collaboration to create greater pressure at the state level for a safer, more transparent, and well-regulated mobile market in Nepal.
Key Agendas Discussed
- Institutional introduction and alignment of strategic directions between both executive committees.
- Shared challenges, including policy advocacy, grey market concerns, and mobile ecosystem regulation.
- Future roadmap for long-term institutional collaboration.
United Against Grey Market Challenges
Speaking at the meeting, CAN Federation Acting President Chiranjivi Adhikari stated that as mobile technology and digital infrastructure have become a backbone of Nepal’s economy, collaborative efforts are essential to eliminate irregularities within the sector.
He emphasized that illegal imports through grey markets not only cause significant revenue losses for the government but also negatively impact legitimate businesses operating through legal channels.
Similarly, NMDA President Raghu Tripathi noted that this alliance with CAN Federation provides renewed momentum for the effective implementation of systems such as the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) and for advocating practical and effective import policies.
Strong Leadership Participation
The meeting witnessed the presence of top leadership from both organizations, highlighting the seriousness of the collaboration and laying a strong foundation for future implementation.
Participants included CAN Federation Acting President Chiranjivi Adhikari, the General Secretary, Treasurer, and members of the 15th Executive Committee, along with NMDA President Raghu Tripathi, former president, vice president, general secretary, treasurer, and other senior officials.
The alliance is expected to play a crucial role in shaping Nepal’s mobile industry through coordinated advocacy, policy reforms, and efforts to establish a more transparent and regulated digital marketplace.
