Shrawan Traditions bring Kathmandu Markets Alive

Kathmandu: Markets across Indra Chowk and New Road have become increasingly vibrant with the arrival of Shrawan, as women gather to shop for colorful pote, traditional chura, mehendi, and seasonal accessories linked with the month’s cultural traditions.

Shops in these busy commercial areas are displaying a wide range of green, red, yellow, and multicolored pote and bangles, attracting customers of different age groups. Many women visit the markets with friends and family to select matching sets, compare designs, and prepare for the month in a festive atmosphere.

Wearing pote and chura during Shrawan remains a widely followed tradition among Nepali women. While green is especially popular during the season, shoppers are also choosing colorful combinations that match their clothing and personal style.

Mehendi has also become an important part of the seasonal celebration. Temporary stalls and beauty shops around the market areas are offering simple and detailed designs, with women decorating their hands as part of the Shrawan look.

The seasonal rush has also increased business for local sellers of jewellery, cosmetics, clothes, and accessories. Traders expect demand to remain strong throughout the month as more shoppers visit Kathmandu’s traditional markets.
