Nepal Photojournalists complete AI Skills Workshop to boost Digital Newsroom capabilities
KATHMANDU — Nepal’s National Forum of Photojournalists (NFPJ Nepal) has concluded a two-day artificial intelligence (AI) skills workshop aimed at helping photojournalists integrate AI tools into newsroom workflows while maintaining editorial standards and ethical practices.
The training, titled “AI Skills for Photojournalists: Enhancing Professional Capacity,” provided participants with practical instruction on AI-assisted photojournalism, international-standard news photo caption writing, mobile journalism, AI-powered image and video editing, news video production, audio recording, fact verification and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
AI specialist Ajay Sharma led both theoretical and hands-on sessions, focusing on how AI can improve productivity without compromising accuracy, credibility or editorial integrity. Participants completed practical exercises using real news content to produce professional photo captions, multimedia reports and verified digital content.
The workshop also explored the growing role of AI in modern newsrooms, highlighting methods for increasing efficiency while preserving journalistic ethics and editorial oversight.
At the closing ceremony, former Bagmati Province minister and provincial assembly member Ram Krishna Maharjan presented certificates to participants and a letter of appreciation to the trainer. He said AI is becoming indispensable across industries and stressed that its benefits depend on responsible and ethical use, warning that misuse could create significant challenges.
Former NFPJ Nepal President Rajbhai Suwal said AI literacy has become essential for modern photojournalists, adding that journalists who fail to adapt to emerging technologies risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive media landscape.
Swastishree Gurukul IB World School Managing Director Meena Maharjan and Principal Neha KC attended the ceremony as distinguished guests.
NFPJ Nepal President Pradeep Raj Onta said the workshop was organised to equip photojournalists with AI-ready skills as digital technologies rapidly reshape journalism. He expressed confidence that such training would strengthen participants’ knowledge, technical skills and professional competitiveness in digital media.
Onta also thanked Swastishree Gurukul IB World School for sponsoring the programme and said NFPJ Nepal plans to continue organising technology-focused professional development programmes.
Organisers said the workshop is expected to encourage responsible and effective use of AI while promoting internationally recognised standards in photojournalism.
The workshop was held on July 25–26 at Swastishree Gurukul IB World School in Sanobharyang, Kathmandu.
