Sony Unveils FX5 Cinema Camera With 16-Bit RAW and Open Gate Recording

KATHMANDU: Sony has introduced the FX5, a new full-frame Cinema Line camera featuring 5K Open Gate recording, internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW capture, and AI-powered autofocus in a compact professional body.

The camera uses a newly developed 16.6-megapixel stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor, paired with the BIONZ XR2 processor and a dedicated AI unit. It supports full-sensor 3:2 Open Gate recording, giving filmmakers greater flexibility to create different formats for cinema, television, and social media.

The FX5 can record 5K video at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 120fps, and Full HD at up to 240fps. Sony claims more than 15 stops of dynamic range, while base ISO settings of 800, 4,000, and 12,800 support shooting in low-light environments.

Its AI autofocus system can recognize and track human eyes, faces, heads, and body movements. The camera also includes five-axis image stabilization, dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, anamorphic lens support, and professional monitoring tools such as waveform, false colour, and focus mapping.

Positioned between the Sony FX3 and FX6, the FX5 is designed for independent filmmakers, documentary producers, commercial videographers, and professional content creators.

Sony has priced the camera body at US$4,899.99, while the package with an XLR audio handle costs US$5,499.99.
