Nepal Clears Backlog of 2.74 Million Driving Licenses, Urges Drivers to Renew Expiring Cards

Kathmamdu-Nepal’s Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has announced that it has completed printing all pending driving license cards that were awaiting production until the end of the Nepali month of Asar.

According to the department, a total of 2,747,253 driving license cards have been printed and dispatched to the respective transport offices across the country via postal service for distribution.

The department said the accelerated printing process followed an agreement signed on November 12, 2025 (Kartik 12, 2082 BS) between the DoTM and the Security Printing Centre, which helped clear the long-standing backlog.

However, driving licenses with less than one year remaining before expiry have not been printed. The department explained that drivers renewing such licenses will receive a new license valid for 10 years after renewal. It has therefore requested drivers whose licenses have less than one year of validity left to visit their nearest transport office to complete the renewal process.

In addition, the DoTM said it has upgraded its system to streamline both new license issuance and renewals. The improvements allow applicants’ details to be verified through the National Identity Card database, while government fees can now be paid through an online payment system.
