Kathmandu – Nepal Telecom has announced free telephone, SMS and internet services for residents affected by the devastating Bhote Koshi floods.
The move follows a directive from Minister for Information and Communications Dr. Bikram Timilsina to immediately provide free communication and internet facilities to people living in flood-affected areas.
According to Nepal Telecom spokesperson Kamal Lamichhane, affected customers will receive unlimited voice calls, 2 GB of data per day and 50 SMS messages free of charge for two days.
Nepal Telecom has also been sending continuous SMS alerts to customers in and around the affected areas, urging them to remain cautious and follow safety instructions.
Preliminary reports indicate that the floods have damaged seven telecom towers — two in Rasuwa and five in Nuwakot. Technical teams from Nepal Telecom have already been deployed to the affected areas to repair damaged towers and restore telecommunications infrastructure.
The company said it is working to maintain communication services at a time when reliable connectivity is crucial for rescue, relief and emergency coordination.
