KATHMANDU: China is providing $2 million in cash assistance to Nepal as part of its emergency support following the devastating floods in Rasuwa and other affected areas. China has also sent relief supplies and technical support to assist Nepal’s ongoing disaster response. Reuters reported that China is among several countries providing financial and emergency assistance to Nepal.
The assistance comes as Nepal seeks specialised international help for difficult rescue and recovery operations. The government has identified needs including tunnel rescue expertise, restoration of damaged transport and communication links, and forensic support such as DNA testing.
Neighbouring India has also provided major humanitarian assistance. India initially sent 10 tonnes of emergency supplies and medicines, followed by another 37.5 tonnes of relief materials. More assistance has since been delivered as India continues coordinating with Nepali authorities.
The international support follows the catastrophic August 26 flash flood, which struck Rasuwa and swept downstream through river systems toward Nuwakot and other areas. The disaster has caused extensive loss of life, left many people missing and severely damaged roads, bridges, settlements and hydropower infrastructure. Search, relief and recovery efforts remain underway.
