KATHMANDU: The Chinese government has formally handed over $2 million, equivalent to around Rs 305 million, in emergency cash assistance to Nepal to support people affected by the recent devastating floods.
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming met Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle on Sunday and handed over the cheque for the assistance announced by the Chinese government.
In addition to the government assistance, the ambassador also handed over $200,000, around Rs 30.6 million, provided by the Red Cross Society of China for Nepal’s flood response.
During the handover, Ambassador Zhang said Nepal and China had both suffered from the major disaster in the Himalayan region and stressed the importance of working together during the crisis. He said China’s president and prime minister had conveyed messages of support and solidarity to the Government of Nepal.
The ambassador also said other forms of Chinese assistance had started arriving in Nepal. On Sunday, two Chinese aircraft delivered around 50 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to Kathmandu, including tents, blankets, sleeping bags, medical kits and biscuits for affected communities.
China has indicated that additional assistance will continue as Nepal carries out search, relief and recovery operations following the floods.
The cash assistance and emergency supplies are expected to support Nepal’s ongoing response and help provide immediate relief to families and communities affected by the disaster.
