Kathmandu – Chinese diaspora living in Nepal has donated generously to help in disaster relief operations in areas affected by the August 26 mudslide catastrophe. Jin Xiaodong, president of the Chinese Overseas Association in Nepal, and Huang Xiaobing, secretary general of the association along with its team members met with Swarnim Wagle, Nepal’s Minister of Finance, in Kathmandu on September 2, 2026, and handed over to him the amount of NPR 5,455,339, which had been collected at its initiative from some Chinese enterprises and social enthusiasts currently active in Nepal. The money will be earmarked for emergency relief fund and follow-up reconstruction of the severely damaged area.
When a major mudslide disaster struck in the mountainous areas of northern Nepal, it has touched the hearts of Chinese nationals residing in Nepal. Chinese Overseas Association in Nepal immediately issued a fundraising campaign, which received a positive response from the vast number of them. A guesthouse run by a Chinese national in Kathmandu was set up as an offline fundraising site. Many Chinese came personally to donate some money, while many more participated online. Some donors were reluctant to leave their full names, and the fund-raising register was kept with only a last name or a nickname. There were also some elderly Chinese and Tibetans personnel, who actively participated in this event. In just a few days, more than 150 caring people have made their contribution, which amounted to the number mentioned above. This amount has been deposited in the account of the Nepal Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
“Disaster is relentless, but there is love on earth.” Chairman Jin Xiaodong said while handing over the donation. “Although we live overseas, we are always connected to the people of Nepal and have a shared future. Although the amount of this donation is small, it bears the deep friendship that every Chinese national has for the people in the affected areas, and hopes to make a small contribution to the relief of the affected people and reconstruction of their homes.”
On behalf of the Nepali government, Minister Wagle expressed sincere gratitude to the Chinese diaspora in Nepal for their generous and kind acts. He pointed out that relief efforts in the current disaster areas are pressing forward, but some sections of roads to the most affected areas have not yet been fully opened, and donations from all sides will be quickly disbursed in the frontline of the disaster, mainly for the procurement of emergency supplies and the temporary shelter of the affected people, ensuring maximum relief benefits.
Chairman Jin Xiaodong expressed sincere thanks to various member organizations, Chinese enterprises in Nepal, cultural and educational institutions, medical assistance teams, Chinese nationals residing here and caring individuals from all walks of life. He said that love knows no borders, and trickled-down power can become a strong force. While developing their businesses, Chinese diaspora in Nepal always remain committed to social responsibility. They are ready to breathe a life together with the Nepali people, overcome difficulties together, jointly safeguard and carry forward the millennia-old friendship across the Himalayas, and jointly build a spiritual homeland for the Chinese and Nepali people. He also said, “We pray that our Nepali friends residing in the affected areas will overcome the disaster at an early date, rebuild a beautiful home, and usher in a happy and peaceful life tomorrow.”
