Kathmandu – With the aim of strengthening the development, expansion and promotion of basketball in Nepal, a nationwide Under-16 Inter-School Basketball Championship 2083 is set to be organized jointly by the Nepal Basketball Association, Nepalaya International and PABSON.
The tournament will be held at the National Sports Council Covered Hall, Dasharath Stadium, Tripureshwor, from Ashoj 5 to Ashoj 13, 2083, with a total of 40 teams from across the country expected to participate.
The championship has been designed to provide a structured platform for the growing interest and participation in basketball at the school and youth levels. Its key objective is to identify, develop and encourage talented young players and connect them with Nepal’s broader national sports system.
The organizers have stated that the event will go beyond being a competitive tournament. It is intended to serve as an important foundation for identifying promising players at the school level and developing them into athletes capable of competing at the national level.
The competition will also focus on developing discipline, leadership, teamwork, healthy competition and sporting values among young players, contributing to the long-term growth of basketball in Nepal.
A major priority of the championship is the identification and selection of talented Under-16 players. Players who demonstrate outstanding performance and strong potential during the tournament will be considered for further training, assessment and development programmes.
The long-term goal is to develop a strong Under-16 national basketball team from the identified players and prepare them to represent Nepal at future international competitions, including the South Asian Games.
Organizers believe that this initiative will help establish a structured pathway in Nepali basketball, beginning with talent identification at the school level and progressing toward national team development and international competition.
As schools play a crucial role in producing young athletes, the initiative also emphasizes the importance of developing quality sporting environments within educational institutions while balancing academics and sports.
The organizers expect the tournament to strengthen cooperation among schools, coaches, players and other stakeholders and create a sustainable foundation for the future development of basketball in Nepal.
