Kathmandu – U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Scott Urbom joined U.S. Government exchange program alumni and Nepali alumni of U.S. universities at a gathering held in solidarity with families and communities affected by Nepal’s devastating floods on Tuesday.
Following the disaster, members of the Nepal-U.S. Alumni Network (NUSAN) have mobilized their networks to support relief efforts, including distributing relief supplies, facilitating blood donations and reaching communities affected by the floods.
Urbom said the United States had worked with Nepali partners from the outset to mobilize assistance for disaster-affected communities. He highlighted the contribution of exchange alumni, who have stepped forward to support their communities during the crisis.
According to the U.S. Embassy, the U.S. State Department has provided more than $36 million in humanitarian, health and forensic assistance following the disaster. The assistance includes emergency food and logistics support, DNA and forensic assistance, and disaster-response supplies and equipment.
The gathering also featured the premiere of a special tribute song by American country artist and State Department Musical Envoy Jessica Lynn and renowned Nepali sarangi musician and U.S. exchange alumnus Kiran Nepali.
The musical collaboration brought together American and Nepali artists to honor those who lost their lives in August 26 Bhotekoshi disaster, remember those still awaiting answers and express solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
