Lalitpur — Construction is underway on a disability-friendly pedestrian sky bridge at Kusunti on the Ring Road, designed to make road crossings safer and more accessible for people with disabilities, senior citizens, children and other pedestrians.
The project, being built by Lalitpur Metropolitan City in Ward No. 13, will feature elevators on both sides of the Ring Road, allowing people who cannot comfortably use stairs to access the overhead crossing. The bridge is being described by city officials as Nepal’s first lift-equipped disability-friendly overhead bridge.
The project was formally started in March 2024 after the Department of Roads granted permission to construct the bridge along the Ring Road. The contract was awarded to Lama-Pragati-Mani-Buddha JV, with DB Multi-Engineering Pvt. Ltd. serving as the consultant. The contract value was around Rs. 46.8 million, and the contractor is responsible for maintenance of the structure for five years.
The bridge is being constructed at a location where road safety has been a major concern. According to Lalitpur Metropolitan City officials, the busy Ring Road section has recorded multiple fatal accidents, strengthening the need for a dedicated pedestrian crossing.
The project has faced delays since construction began, including technical issues and contractor-related delays. However, recent reports indicate that construction has been progressing, with the metropolitan city aiming to bring the facility into operation within the first three months of fiscal year 2083/84.
Once completed, the Kusunti sky bridge is expected to provide a more inclusive and safer way to cross the Ring Road, particularly for pedestrians who face difficulties using conventional stair-only footbridges.
