Kathmandu – Bhatbhateni electric vans are now carrying fresh produce and home deliveries as the retailer begins moving away from petrol and diesel vehicles. The company has introduced 12 Foton vans in its first phase.
The vans will collect vegetables from farmers and deliver purchases to households across Kathmandu Valley. Bhatbhateni sources produce from areas including Makwanpur, Chitwan, Sindhuli and Janakpur.
Bhatbhateni Chairman and Managing Director Min Bahadur Gurung said lower transport costs could benefit both farmers and shoppers. He also cited environmental concerns and the opportunity to use Nepal’s electricity instead of imported fuel.
Mr. Gurung estimated electricity costs of Rs 1,100–1,500 for a Janakpur–Kathmandu return journey, compared with Rs 12,000–13,000 in diesel for a small vehicle. These are company estimates.
Ten cars used by managers and department heads have also switched to electric power, alongside two electric vehicles already operating, according to the report.
Bhatbhateni plans to gradually electrify its fleet of 163 vehicles. Mr. Gurung said the company would also consider larger electric trucks when available, extending the transition beyond smaller delivery vehicles.
