Special security plan in place for Holi festival
The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division together with metropolitan police ranges of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur has made elaborate arrangements to rein in unruly festive revellers, stunt bikers and drunk drivers during the Holi festival.
DIGP Prakash Aryal, MTPD in-charge, said traffic cops armed with radar guns and breathalysers will catch drivers and riders indulging in over-speeding and drink driving. “Those violating traffic rules on the pretext of the festival will be detained on the spot,” he warned.
Over 5,000 cops, both in uniform and civvies, along with 95 control room vehicles will be deployed from dawn till dusk on Tuesday, the day of Holi festival.
DIGP Aryal informed that traffic checkpoints will be set up in as many as 53 places to cover all routes within the Valley. “Any person caught driving under the influence, riding bikes without helmets and carrying more than one pillion rider, and riding modified bikes will be brought to book,” he said.
On-duty cops will also detain vehicles belonging to offenders. Many road accidents take place when the youths do not follow the traffic rules in the name of celebration of festivals and traffic police are to intensify checks.
Special teams and interceptors will also be deployed at major intersections to detect and prosecute violators. Police have warned that there will be zero tolerance against violation of traffic rules.
