Chhatia street in Sauraha: A new attraction showcasing Tharu tradition
Sauraha, a popular tourist destination in Chitwan, has opened a new attraction aimed at highlighting the local Tharu community’s cultural heritage. The 45-meter-long ‘Chhatia Street’ showcases traditional Tharu Chhatias (large hats).
The project, funded by the Government of Bagmati Province and Ratnanagar Municipality Ward No. 6, was constructed at NPR 3.3 million. The street features Tharu cuisine, handmade crafts, and cultural performances, including traditional dances like Jhamta and Lathi Nach.
The initiative aims to boost tourism in the area and preserve the Tharu community’s unique culture, which has faced challenges due to the growing presence of other communities in Sauraha.
