Bakra Eid Celebrated Across Nepal Today
Kathmandu-Muslim communities across Nepal are celebrating Bakra Eid (Eid-ul-Adha), the second largest festival in Islam, today by offering prayers and exchanging greetings. According to tradition, devotees took ritual baths early in the morning and gathered at nearby mosques and Eidgahs for special congregational prayers.
Large crowds gathered at the Nepali Jame Mosque and Kashmiri Mosque in Kathmandu, as well as at mosques and Eidgahs across the country. The festival commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to Allah around 1,439 years ago, according to the Hijri calendar.
The festival will continue until Saturday. The government has declared a public holiday today on the occasion of Bakra Eid. With Republic Day on Friday followed by the weekend, Nepal will observe four consecutive public holidays.
