Kathmandu — Kathmandu Valley is witnessing heavier traffic as the Dashain travel rush begins, with thousands of people preparing to leave the capital for their hometowns to celebrate the festival with their families.
Traffic pressure has increased around major roads and transport hubs, including Gongabu, Kalanki, Koteshwor, Balkhu and Chabahil. Around one million people are expected to leave Kathmandu Valley during the Dashain travel period, putting additional pressure on the Valley’s roads and public transport.
Advance bus ticket booking opened on Ashwin 23 (October 9), leading to crowds at major bus parks and ticket counters. Passenger assistance desks have also been established at several locations to help travellers with ticketing and transportation-related concerns.
The festive travel period also comes with concerns over road conditions, traffic congestion, floods and landslides in different parts of the country. Authorities and traffic police are working to manage the increased movement and improve safety on major routes.
With the number of travellers expected to rise further in the coming days, commuters are advised to plan their journeys early, allow extra travel time, follow traffic rules and check road conditions before travelling.
