Deputy Speaker election scheduled for April 10 as RSP holds decisive majority in house of representatives
Kathmandu-The election for the Deputy Speaker of Nepal’s House of Representatives has been scheduled for Friday, April 10 (Chaitra 27). The date was announced during today’s House meeting by Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal.
According to constitutional provisions, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker must be from different political parties and of different genders. However, if there is representation from only one party in the House, or if only a single candidate is nominated despite multiple parties, both positions can be held by members of the same party.
Currently, the House of Representatives consists of six political parties, with the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) holding a dominant majority. In the 275-member House, RSP has 182 सांसद (members of parliament), followed by Nepali Congress with 38 seats, CPN-UML with 25, Communist Party of Nepal with 17, Shram Sanskriti Party with 7, and Rastriya Prajatantra Party with 5 members.
Given its overwhelming majority, the candidate supported by the Rastriya Swatantra Party is almost certain to be elected as the next Deputy Speaker.
