FIFA World Cup 2026: A historic 48 team tournament ready to rewrite football history
Kathmandu- The 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup, widely regarded as the grandest event in world football, will take place across North America in 2026. Expected to be the largest and most spectacular World Cup ever, the tournament will set new records in terms of participating teams, number of matches, and host nations.
For the first time in FIFA World Cup history, 48 teams will compete for football’s most prestigious trophy. A total of 104 matches will be played, making it the biggest World Cup ever staged.The tournament will begin on June 11, 2026, with the opening match at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Host nation Mexico will face South Africa in the tournament opener. After nearly 40 days of competition, the World Cup will conclude on July 19 with the final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey, USA.
The 2026 edition will also mark a historic first as the World Cup will be jointly hosted by three countries ,the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Matches will be played across 16 host cities in the three nations. The United States will host games in 11 cities: New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Kansas City, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston, and San Francisco. Mexico’s host cities are Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, while Canada will host matches in Toronto and Vancouver.The competition format has also been revamped. The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. Following the group stage, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance to the knockout rounds, creating a 32-team elimination stage. The newly introduced Round of 32 is expected to make the tournament even more competitive and exciting.
The group stage will run from June 11 to June 27. The Round of 32 will take place from June 28 to July 3, followed by the Round of 16 from July 4 to July 7. Quarterfinal matches are scheduled for July 9–11, while the semifinals will be played on July 14 and 15. The third-place playoff will be held on July 18.
Quarterfinal matches will be hosted in Los Angeles, Kansas City, Miami, and Boston, while Dallas and Atlanta will stage the semifinals. Miami will host the third-place match.The battle for football’s ultimate prize will reach its climax on July 19 at MetLife Stadium, which has a capacity of more than 82,500 spectators. The two semifinal winners will face off for the coveted FIFA World Cup trophy.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is considered historic for several reasons. With 48 participating teams and 104 matches, it will be the largest tournament ever in terms of teams, players, and games. The expanded format also opens the door for several nations to make their World Cup debut.
