Four new helicopter companies apply for operating license in Nepal
Kathmandu – Nepal’s aviation sector is set to expand further, as four new helicopter companies have entered the process of obtaining operating licenses. The move comes amid growing demand for helicopter services driven by tourism, mountaineering, emergency rescue, and commercial aviation activities.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), Heli Air Nepal, Sagarmatha Air, Gaganchumbi Air, and Sumeda Air have submitted detailed proposals to obtain Air Operator Certificates (AOC). CAAN Spokesperson Mr. Gyanendra Bhul stated that the applications are currently under review at the second stage of the five-step certification process.
He said that following the proposal review, the Authority will evaluate key requirements necessary for commercial air operations, including operational capability, safety standards, availability of skilled technical manpower, aircraft and equipment, and training systems. Operating certificates will be issued only after companies meet all regulatory and safety criteria.
In addition, Daphe Air has also applied for an Air Operator Certificate with a plan to introduce a 72-seat ATR aircraft to operate both domestic and international flights.
As per existing regulations, companies seeking approval to operate helicopters or aircraft must either have a minimum of three aircraft or submit a commitment to expand their fleet to five aircraft within five years or ensure a merger arrangement.
CAAN noted that helicopter usage has increased significantly in recent years, particularly in mountainous regions, for tourism, emergency rescue operations, medical services, cargo transport, and commercial flights. Currently, around 40 helicopters operated by 12 companies are active in Nepal. Similarly, seven domestic airlines are providing air services to both accessible and remote destinations across the country.
30 International Airlines Operating from Nepal
According to CAAN, a total of 30 airlines from 15 countries, including Nepal, are currently operating flights from Nepal to 28 international destinations. These include eight destinations in South Asia, seven in the Middle East, four in Southeast Asia, eight in East Asia, and one in Europe. Since signing its first air service agreement with India in 1964, Nepal has established international air service agreements with 42 countries.
