The Newar community in Nepal celebrated the Nepal Sambat New Year 1145 (Nhu Daya Bhintuna 1145) today, marked by vibrant programmes and rallies. This New Year’s Day honors the indigenous calendar, originally initiated by Shankhadhar Sakhwa in 880 AD, who freed people from debt under Lichchhavi King Raghavdev’s rule. Recognized as a national luminary in 1999, Sakhwa’s legacy remains vital to Nepal’s cultural heritage.
In the evening, the Newar community will perform the Mha Puja ritual, worshiping the self to seek a prosperous life.
