Government Ends Food Support for Displaced Families in Holding Centers
Kathmandu-The government has stopped providing meals to landless squatters staying in holding centers after they were displaced from various informal settlements across the Kathmandu Valley.In addition, lodge operators accommodating some of the displaced families have asked them to vacate immediately.
The meals at the holding centers had been managed by the High-Powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee. The committee had instructed canteen operators to stop serving food from July 3 (Asar 19), although some continued providing meals until yesterday or today.Earlier, the government had asked the displaced families to leave the holding centers and arrange their own accommodation by June 26 (Asar 12). The deadline was later extended to July 3 (Asar 19).
To support self-relocation, the government has announced a one-time payment of NPR 25,000, followed by monthly assistance of NPR 15,000 for three months.The High-Powered Bagmati Civilization Integrated Development Committee has also issued a notice asking eligible beneficiaries to collect their payments by Wednesday. Today is the final day to submit applications for the assistance.
