Kathmandu – International Day of Older Persons is observed every year on October 1 to recognize the contributions of older people and raise awareness about the challenges they face.
The day highlights the importance of ensuring safety, dignity, respect and equal opportunities for senior citizens. It also encourages families, communities and governments to create supportive environments where older people can live healthy, secure and meaningful lives.
The 2026 theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives,” focuses on adapting social systems and services to meet the needs of a growing ageing population.
On this occasion, greater attention is being drawn to healthcare, social protection, accessibility, financial security and active participation of older people in society.
