Historic achievements of Nepali women honored by the Nepal Women Chamber
Kathmandu – The Nepal Women’s Chamber held a special ceremony to honor Nepali women who have made historic contributions in various sectors. The “Leading Women Honors” event recognized both living and deceased figures from fields including politics, justice, education, social service, art, administration, tourism, and sports.
The awards were presented by former President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav; Chairman of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce Diamond Jubilee Committee Mr. Rajesh Kaji Shrestha; President of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce Mr. Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal; and President of the Nepal Women Chamber Mrs. Urmila Shrestha.
Notable honorees included Nepal’s first female Speaker Mrs. Onsari Gharti Magar; the first female chief minister Mrs. Astalaxmi Shakya; scouting leader Mr. Rambadan Joshi; gender rights expert Ms. Chandani Joshi; the first female engineer Mrs. Shanti Mall; and the first female commercial pilot Mrs. Raksha Rana, among others.
Also recognized were Mr. Milen Thapa and Mrs. Jaya Rajya Laxmi Shah from Lions and Rotary sectors, former Chief Secretary Mrs. Lila Devi Gadtaula, economist Dr. Puspa Shrestha, artist Mrs. Urmila Upadhyaya Garg, actress Mr. Bhuvan Chandra, police officer Mrs. Bimala Thapa Sharma, and entrepreneur Mrs. Shrijana Rana.
Posthumous honors were presented to the families of leading women figures such as former Queen Consort Mrs. Rajendra Laxmi Shah, writer Mrs. Parijat (Bishnu Kumari Waiba), mountaineer Mrs. Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, and other trailblazing personalities in Nepali history.
Additionally, newly elected federal Members of Parliament Mrs. Lima Adhikari, Mrs. Basumaya Tamang, Mrs. Nitima Karki Bhandari, and Mrs. Indira Rana Magar were also honored during the event.
Former President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav expressed his pride in honoring these women, emphasizing their lasting influence on both the country and future generations. Chairman Mr. Rajesh Kaji Shrestha highlighted the importance of this recognition in the chamber’s history, while President Mr. Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal stressed that such events amplify the visibility of Nepali women on a global scale.
President Mrs. Urmila Shrestha shared that the event, marking the former Chamber of Commerce’s Diamond Jubilee, celebrated the contributions of women, reinforcing the chamber’s ongoing focus on women’s empowerment and entrepreneurship.
The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks from former president of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Rajendra Mall, to all attendees.
