Home minister Sudan Gurung resigns citing ethical responsibility and calls for investigation
Kathmandu-Home Minister Sudan Gurung has announced his resignation effective from Baishak 9, 2083, stating that he has been serving the responsibility of Home Minister with full honesty and commitment since assuming office.
In his statement, Gurung said he has taken seriously the recent public concerns, questions, and comments raised at the citizen level regarding his shareholdings and related matters. He emphasized that for him, ethics matter more than position, and public trust is the highest form of power.
Referring to the ongoing Gen Z movement in the country demanding good governance, transparency, and accountability, he stated that the message from the movement is clear: public life must remain clean and leadership must be accountable.
He also remarked that the government has been built on the sacrifice and blood of 46 individuals, and therefore any question raised about it must be answered through ethics and moral responsibility.
Stating that he does not want any conflict of interest to affect the functioning of the ministry, Gurung announced that he is stepping down from the post of Home Minister to allow an impartial investigation into the matters related to him.
He said he has fulfilled his moral responsibility by resigning and urged for a fair and transparent investigation.
In his concluding appeal, he addressed journalists, citizens, and the youth, stating that if real change is desired, everyone must stand on the path of truth, honesty, and self-purification. He further emphasized that those who seek an ideal and just system must also show sacrifice and moral courage.
The resignation marks a significant political development amid growing public debate over governance, accountability, and transparency in the country.
