January 1st marks both New Year and Rastriya Topi Diwas
The Jagaruk Yuva Abhiyan Nepal is spearheading a campaign to celebrate Rastriya Topi Diwas (National Topi Day) on January 1 to revive the tradition of wearing Nepal’s national Dhaka Topi and fostering cultural pride among the youth.
This initiative, which began 12 years ago, has gained traction as more people embrace national attire not only on January 1 but also during weddings and other cultural events.
In addition, January 1 is also observed as Rastriya Topi Diwas, with campaign advocate Ramji Balami emphasizing the importance of adding a Nepali touch to the English New Year. “This is not about opposing the English New Year but about showcasing Nepali identity and pride,” Balami said.
The campaign has resonated strongly with the youth, who are increasingly adopting national attire and celebrating their cultural heritage with renewed enthusiasm.
