KATHMANDU — Indigenous communities from across Nepal marked the 32nd International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples in Kathmandu with a large cultural rally, traditional performances and a public gathering at Khula Manch.
The programme was organised by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) together with its federal council secretariat and main organising committee. The celebration brought together representatives from various indigenous nationalities, cultural groups, community leaders and members of the public.
Participants joined the rally in traditional attire, carrying cultural symbols and showcasing folk music, dances and indigenous traditions. The procession started from Bhrikutimandap and later reached Khula Manch, where the main programme was held.
This year’s celebration highlighted the importance of protecting indigenous rights, promoting social inclusion and preserving the languages, cultures, identities and traditional knowledge of Nepal’s indigenous communities.
The global theme, “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being,” drew attention to the important role indigenous midwives have played in protecting maternal health, traditional knowledge and community well-being.
The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed every year on August 9 to promote awareness of the rights, cultures and contributions of indigenous peoples worldwide.
The Kathmandu programme also served as a platform for indigenous communities to call for stronger representation, equality, cultural preservation and meaningful participation in Nepal’s social and national development.
