Kathmandu – Kathmandu Metropolitan City has announced a contribution of Rs 45.4 million to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support rescue, relief and rehabilitation efforts following the devastating Bhotekoshi floods in Rasuwa.
The decision was taken during the city’s 57th executive meeting, which focused on Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s role in assisting flood-affected communities. The meeting also authorised the Metropolitan Disaster Management Committee to mobilise essential supplies, equipment and manpower based on needs identified in coordination with local governments in affected areas.
The support package includes food, clothing, drinking water, blankets, tarpaulins, gas cylinders, cooking equipment, ambulances, transport vehicles, hearses, excavators, jet machines and other emergency resources.
Of the total contribution, Rs 30 million will come directly from the metropolitan disaster management fund, while the remaining amount will be raised through contributions from elected representatives and municipal employees, including portions of their salaries and allowances.
Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said disaster response should not end with rescue alone, stressing the need to support affected people until they are able to return to normal daily life. She also highlighted the need to assist students from flood-hit areas living in Kathmandu and patients who may be without caregivers.
Since the flood, the metropolitan city has already deployed five ambulances to Nuwakot, stationed two more at Tribhuvan International Airport, sent 19 metropolitan scouts to affected areas and assigned 10 municipal police personnel to hospitals to support injured patients.
The city has also provided gas cylinders, mats, blankets, drinking water and other essentials to around 200 families sheltered at Pahelo Gumba in Nagarjun Municipality. Free passenger vehicles have been operating between Kathmandu and Bidur to help stranded travellers.
Kathmandu Metropolitan City has further decided to establish an assistance desk and information centre at Rastriya Sabha Griha to coordinate support, collect details of affected residents and facilitate relief.
The city has also appealed to residents, businesses, industries and professionals to contribute to disaster relief efforts according to their capacity.
