Kathmandu Metropolitan City installs dry riser system for narrow alleys

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has introduced a “dry riser” system to supply water during fire emergencies in narrow streets and alleys inaccessible to fire trucks.
A dry riser is a pipeline system designed for firefighting, particularly in areas where fire trucks cannot reach. Unlike “wet risers,” which have a constant water flow, dry risers remain empty until filled during emergencies.
The dry riser system has inlet valves at both ends where fire trucks can connect to pump water. Outlets are installed at intervals of 45 to 75 meters along the pipeline. When water is pumped into the inlet, it can be accessed through any outlet as needed. Fire hoses are then connected to these outlets to control the fire effectively.
This initiative aims to enhance firefighting capabilities in Kathmandu’s densely populated areas with narrow and inaccessible streets.
