Kathmandu to Launch Modern Waste Transfer Station in Teku by Mid-November

Kathmandu-Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is preparing to bring its under-construction waste transfer station in Teku into operation by mid-November, aiming to modernize and streamline the city’s waste management system.

Following an inspection of the construction site on Wednesday, Acting Mayor Sunita Dangol said the project is expected to be completed before mid-November and begin operations within the same month.

Dangol stated that the new facility will significantly improve waste management by replacing the current practice of open waste sorting, which has contributed to environmental pollution and public health risks.

According to her, the transfer station will use a mechanized waste segregation system equipped with a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) to separate organic and inorganic waste.

Inorganic waste will be sent for recycling, while organic waste will be transported to the Banchare Danda landfill site for proper disposal. Dangol added that the metropolitan city is also planning to utilize organic waste for compost production in the future.

She said the operation of the new transfer station is expected to reduce the volume of waste transported to the Banchare Danda landfill, making the city’s waste management process more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
