Lake in Khumbu region triggers major outburst, flooding Thame village
A rare climatic event caused a significant outburst from snowy lakes beneath the Thengbo Glacier, leading to massive flooding that has swept through parts of Thame village in the Everest region.
According to Mingma Sherpa of Thamechho Kydug, more than half of Thame village has been affected by the disaster. The village, known as the home of famous climbers like Apa Sherpa, Kami Rita Sherpa, and Lakpa Rita Sherpa, experienced severe damage. Downstream settlements near the Dhudhkoshi River have been put on high alert.
The full extent of the damage remains unknown as authorities continue to assess the situation. Experts have raised concerns that global warming is increasingly threatening glacial lakes across the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region, making such outbursts more likely in the future.
