Nepal Celebrates 2570th Buddha Jayanti with Nationwide observances
Kathmandu – Nepal is celebrating the 2570th Buddha Jayanti today with religious devotion, cultural programs, and special ceremonies across the country. The government has declared a public holiday nationwide to mark the occasion.
Buddha Jayanti is observed in remembrance of the immense contribution made by Siddhartha Gautama Buddha toward world peace, compassion, and non-violence. Buddhists in Nepal and around the world celebrate the day with deep pious and reverence, as Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana (passing away) are all believed to have occurred on the full moon day of Baishakh.
A grand celebration has been organized at Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha and a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide. Extensive preparations have been made to welcome devotees and visitors from Nepal and abroad.
The Lumbini area has been beautifully decorated for the occasion. The Maya Devi Temple premises, the sacred Pushkarini pond, and surrounding areas have been illuminated with colorful lights, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Various Buddhist stupas and monasteries have also been attractively decorated.
The Lumbini Development Trust had launched a special cleanliness campaign ahead of Buddha Jayanti, making the area cleaner and more organized for visitors attending the celebrations.
Meanwhile, a bicycle rally was organized in Ramgram of West Nawalparasi, an important historical site believed to house the sacred relics of Lord Buddha. According to Ramgram Municipality, the rally began from Panditpur, known as Buddha’s maternal area, and concluded at the Ramgram Stupa.
In addition, a food festival was held in Parasi Bazaar on Friday evening as part of the celebrations. While Buddha Jayanti was previously centered mainly in Lumbini, recent years have seen growing celebrations in Ramgram as well.
Mayor of Ramgram Municipality, Dhanpat Yadav, stated that such events play an important role in highlighting the historical and religious significance of Ramgram. He said the municipality has been continuously working toward the development and international promotion of Buddhist heritage sites such as Ramgram, Panditpur, and Anomaghat.
The municipality believes these initiatives will help establish the region as a new destination for Buddhist tourism and strengthen Ramgram’s identity as another important center for Buddha Jayanti celebrations.
