Nepal celebrates Republic Day with special ceremony in Kathmandu
Kathmandu- Nepal is celebrating Republic Day across the country today, commemorating the historic abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a federal democratic republic.
A special ceremony was held this morning at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, Kathmandu, in the presence of President Ram Chandra Poudel, Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, and other high-ranking government officials and dignitaries.Addressing the ceremony, President Poudel said the republic has ensured political rights for citizens and provided an opportunity for the nation to move forward in unity toward a prosperous future.
“The federal democratic republic has guaranteed political rights for all citizens and created a path toward a better and more prosperous future,” President Poudel said.
The government had requested the President to deliver the main address at the ceremony after Prime Minister Shah decided not to speak at the event. Traditionally, the Prime Minister addresses Republic Day celebrations.Nepal officially became a federal democratic republic on Jestha 15, 2065 B.S. (May 28, 2008), when the first Constituent Assembly formally abolished the 240-year-old monarchy.
Republic Day is observed every year to commemorate the historic declaration that ended absolute monarchy and introduced a republican system of governance in the country. The federal democratic republic is regarded not only as a political system but also as a democratic way of governance and public life based on liberal democratic values. It is widely considered one of the most effective systems for ensuring citizens’ rights, improving living standards, and promoting national prosperity.
Civil society leaders and political observers have repeatedly stressed that the democratic republican system must prioritize development, good governance, prosperity, and national dignity while ensuring the participation of all Nepali citizens in nation-building.They also argue that political stability and economic development are essential for strengthening the republic and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
