Nepal, China Discuss New Roadmap for Science and Innovation Cooperation
Kathmandu– Nepal and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, with discussions focusing on accelerating joint initiatives in research, capacity building, and technology transfer.
The matter was discussed during a courtesy meeting between Nepal’s Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Mahabir Pun, and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, H.E. Mr. Zhang Maoming, at the ministry on Wednesday.
During the meeting, both sides reviewed a cooperation agreement signed in 2023 to promote collaboration in science, technology, and innovation. Although the agreement has yet to be effectively implemented, the two parties discussed forming a joint committee to facilitate its execution and advance bilateral cooperation.
Key areas identified for collaboration include the development of innovation centers in Nepal, research and development in biotechnology, studies of high-altitude regions and Himalayan medicinal herbs, satellite data sharing for ecological monitoring, climate change and environmental research, artificial intelligence (AI), digital transformation, and the exchange and training of researchers and scientists.
Ambassador Zhang Maoming informed the Nepali side that China currently invests approximately 2.8 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in research and development. He also shared information on the priorities and action plans outlined in China’s 15th Five-Year Plan for science, technology, and innovation development.
According to the ministry, Ambassador Zhang provided a copy of the plan’s detailed document. The Nepali side expressed confidence that studying the document would help Nepal gain valuable insights and lessons for advancing its own science, technology, and innovation sectors.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in science, technology, and innovation while strengthening partnerships in research, human resource development, and technology transfer.
