Nepal exports Rs 12.72 Billion worth of electricity to India, faces disruptions due to floods and landslides
In the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Nepal exported electricity worth Rs 12.72 billion to India, supplying 1.67 billion units of surplus power at a rate of Rs 7.63 per unit, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). The electricity was sold to Haryana and Bihar states through the Indian Energy Exchange’s Day Ahead and Real Time Market under a bilateral agreement.
Nepal has also begun supplying power to Bangladesh using India’s infrastructure. However, Kulman Ghising, NEA Managing Director reported that exports have been impacted by recent floods and landslides, which damaged hydropower plants and transmission lines.
The Upper Tamakoshi project, with a 456-megawatt capacity, remains suspended due to landslides, and the Kabeli Corridor Transmission Line was also damaged, affecting around 200 megawatts of electricity. These disruptions are likely to hinder the government’s target of Rs 30 billion in electricity exports for the current fiscal year.
