Nepal government unveils plan to clear informal settlements in Kathmandu valley
Kathmandu-The Government of Nepal has prepared a comprehensive action plan to remove unplanned settlements within the Kathmandu Valley by coordinating with all concerned agencies.
A meeting held on Friday at the Ministry of Urban Development, chaired by Urban Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, endorsed an 11-point decision regarding the relocation and management of informal settlements.
According to the plan, residents will be relocated to safer areas, provided with food and basic services, and identified through verification camps. The government will also arrange transportation using state vehicles.
Authorities will carry out awareness campaigns and issue advance notices, urging residents to vacate before demolition. The clearance of settlement structures is scheduled for Baisakh 12 and 13, 2083.
Priority during relocation will be given to vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with disabilities or chronic illnesses. Medical teams and ambulances will be mobilized by the Ministry of Health and Population.
Temporary shelters will be managed by Kathmandu Metropolitan City, ensuring food, water, and basic needs, while the Ministry of Urban Development will oversee longer-term arrangements.
Verification camps will be set up to identify genuine squatters and distribute photo identity cards. Those who fail verification will be gradually removed from the sites.
After evacuation, the government will clear debris and begin infrastructure development in the vacated areas.
A central coordination committee has been formed under the leadership of the Urban Development Minister, involving key ministries and agencies to ensure effective implementation. An action team will execute the plan and report progress regularly.
The Nepal government has stated that all phases of evacuation, relocation, and rehabilitation will be carried out with proper coordination and timely response to challenges.
