A Milestone in Nepal–UN Relations

“We are celebrating 70 years of working together. Nepal highly values the United Nations for its role in maintaining world peace, supporting growth, and helping us build a better future,” she said, adding that UN support has played a significant role in improving the lives of Nepalis over the decades.
She described the anniversary as an opportunity not only to reflect on past achievements but also to further strengthen cooperation in the years ahead.
Peace, Human Rights, and Development at the Core
Recalling the establishment of the United Nations after the Second World War, Prime Minister Karki noted that peace, human rights, and development remain the organization’s three core pillars, which are closely interconnected.
She said the UN has delivered tangible results in sectors such as health, security, and humanitarian assistance, reinforcing the global commitment that “no one will be left behind.” However, she emphasized that emerging challenges such as climate change and increasing global tensions demand even greater effectiveness from the UN system.
Importance of Multilateralism

“Even though the world has changed, the role of the UN is more relevant than ever,” she said, stressing that global challenges require collective responses.
Nepal’s Contribution to Global Peace
Prime Minister Karki noted that Nepal joined the United Nations on **December 14, 1955**, and has since consistently adhered to the principles of the UN Charter, which she described as the foundation of Nepal’s engagement with the international community.
Highlighting Nepal’s contribution to global peace, she said the country is the largest contributor of troops to United Nations peace support operations.
“Our soldiers and police personnel have served in diverse regions for the cause of peace, and we are ready to extend further support if required,” she stated.
National Update and Development Goals
Providing a national update, the Prime Minister said Nepal is preparing for a smooth political transition through the elections scheduled for March 5, assuring that preparations are nearly complete and the security situation has significantly improved.
She also said Nepal is on track to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2026, calling it a major milestone. She noted that sustaining this progress will require continued investment, technology transfer, and strong partnership with the United Nations.
Commitment to Continued Partnership
“In an interdependent world, cooperation is not a choice but a necessity,” Prime Minister Karki said, reaffirming Nepal’s commitment to remain a strong and reliable partner of the United Nations in pursuit of peace, development, and global cooperation.
