Kathmandu – The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has announced its first Kukur Tihar Reel Contest 2026, offering a cash prize of Rs 100,000 to the winner as part of efforts to promote Nepal’s festivals and cultural traditions through digital platforms.
The initiative follows Tourism Minister Khadga Raj Paudel’s emphasis on using digital media to introduce Nepal’s cultural heritage to international audiences. The competition aims to highlight the significance of Kukur Tihar and the relationship between humans and dogs.
Participants must create original and creative video reels related to Kukur Tihar and publish them on Instagram or Facebook. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of Rs 100,000.
According to the competition guidelines, videos must include English subtitles or an English voiceover to make the content accessible to international viewers.
Participants must use both #NepalFestival and #KukurTihar when posting their videos. Instagram users must tag @nepaltourism, while Facebook participants must tag the official Nepal Tourism Board page.
Entrants must also email a Google Drive link to their published video to [email protected]. The link must allow the video to be viewed and downloaded.
The submission deadline is November 21, 2026. All entries must be original, and the Tourism Board may use submitted videos for tourism promotion, publicity and digital communication.
Kukur Tihar, celebrated during the Tihar festival, honours dogs for their loyalty, companionship and protective role. Families traditionally offer dogs tika, flower garlands and special food as a gesture of gratitude and respect.
The competition is expected to encourage creative participation, particularly among young digital content creators, while introducing Nepal’s cultural traditions and values to audiences worldwide.
