Nepali Climber Chatur Tamang Marks 200th Successful Ascent of Mount Elbrus
Kathmandu — Nepali mountain guide Chatur Tamang has completed his 200th successful ascent of Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, achieving a milestone regarded as a rare accomplishment in high-altitude mountaineering.
Tamang reached the 5,642-meter (18,510-foot) summit at 6:20 a.m. local time on Saturday, July 25, marking his 200th ascent of the mountain in southern Russia.
The milestone came after Tamang led international climbing teams to his 198th and 199th ascents on July 22 and July 23, respectively, before completing the landmark climb two days later.
During the ascent, Tamang unfurled Nepal’s national flag at the summit, continuing a tradition he has maintained on each successful climb to promote Nepal’s mountaineering heritage and the contributions of Nepali climbers on the international stage.
Born in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district, Tamang entered professional mountaineering in 1995 after developing his climbing skills over several years. He has lived in Russia since 2002, where he set a long-term goal of reaching the summit of Mount Elbrus 200 times.
Tamang now divides his time between Nepal and Russia, guiding Russian climbers on expeditions in Nepal and leading international teams on Mount Elbrus.
In addition to Mount Elbrus, Tamang has successfully climbed Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Manaslu, Ama Dablam, Baruntse, Island Peak and Mera Peak.
