Kathmandu – At least Rs 27.33 crore was deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief and Rescue Fund within a day after the government appealed to individuals and organisations to contribute to relief efforts.
The contributions began coming in after the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday evening urged the public and private sector to support the government’s disaster response efforts.
Several banks, business groups and private companies handed over cheques to Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle on Thursday.
Contributors included Kumari Bank, Gorkha Brewery, Ncell, NIC Asia Bank, Reliance Sugar and Chemical Industries, Shiv Shakti Group, Nepal Infrastructure Bank, Sarash Beverages, Rastriya Banijya Bank and Nepal Bank.
The government has yet to determine the total amount collected for the fund, as individuals and organisations in Nepal and abroad have also been depositing money directly into designated bank accounts and through QR payment facilities.
The funds will be used for relief and rescue operations following disasters, according to the government.
