Kathmandu – The official trailer for ‘Road to Everest’, a documentary exploring courage, mountaineering challenges, Sherpa contributions and the impact of climate change on Mount Everest, has been released.
The documentary follows a complete real-life journey from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest, using authentic footage captured by an entirely Nepali technical team. According to the production team, no artificial or computer-generated visuals have been used.
Created after more than two years of research, filming and production, the documentary is written by journalist Santosh Acharya and Nirmal Shrestha, with narration by renowned broadcaster Bhusan Dahal. It has been produced in both Nepali and English.
At the center of the story is Raj Gurung, a man in his fifties who sets out to achieve his dream of climbing Everest, overcoming age, physical challenges and personal limitations along the way.
Directed by Nirmal Shrestha, the 50-minute documentary also highlights the dangers of high-altitude climbing, the vital role of the Sherpa community and the changing Himalayan environment caused by climate change.
Renowned mountaineers Phurba Tenzing Sherpa and Nima Gyalzen Sherpa are featured in the documentary. Phurba has summited Everest 18 times, while Nima has climbed Everest 10 times and completed all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.
The documentary is scheduled to premiere in Kathmandu on August 22, 2026, followed by its international premiere in Hong Kong on September 13, 2026. Further screenings are planned in Nepal and at international film festivals, cinemas and other platforms.
Produced by the We Will Rise Foundation, Road to Everest aims to inspire audiences, promote Nepal’s tourism and draw global attention to the effects of climate change in the Himalayan region.
