Seismic alert: Nepal recorded nine earthquakes in just one month
Nepal witnessed a series of small to moderate earthquakes throughout the month of Poush (mid-December to mid-January), prompting concerns among seismologists about the possibility of a larger seismic event. Data from the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center (NEMRC) reveals the following details about the tremors:
- Poush 2 (December 17, 2024): 4.3 magnitude in Bajhang
- Poush 3 (December 18, 2024): 4.1 magnitude in Bajhang
- Poush 4 (December 19, 2024): 4.7 magnitude in Manang
- Poush 5 (December 20, 2024): 5.2 magnitude in Bajura
- Poush 9 (December 24, 2024): 4.0 magnitude in Darchula
- Poush 11 (December 26, 2024): 4.2 magnitude in Jajarkot
- Poush 16 (December 31, 2024): 4.6 magnitude in Baitadi
- Poush 18 (January 2, 2025): 4.8 magnitude in Sindhupalchowk
- Poush 19 (January 3, 2025): 4.4 magnitude in Mugu
Seismologists are monitoring the situation closely, as such frequent tremors in a short span could signify shifting tectonic stress. While small earthquakes are typical in Nepal, experts warn they may act as precursors to a more significant seismic event.
