Singer and Actor Prashant Tamang Passed Away at 42
Singer and actor Prashant Tamang, winner of Indian Idol Season 3, passed away on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at the age of 42 after suffering a heart attack. He was rushed to a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi, where doctors declared him dead.
According to Indian media reports, Tamang had recently returned to New Delhi after completing a live programme in Arunachal Pradesh. Sources close to him stated that he had not shown any serious health issues or discomfort prior to his death, making the news a shock to fans and the entertainment fraternity.
Born on January 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, West Bengal, Prashant Tamang rose to national prominence from a humble background. After losing his father at a young age, he took on family responsibilities and joined the Kolkata Police as a constable, where he also sang with the police band (orchestra).
His life changed in 2007 when he auditioned for Indian Idol Season 3. His soulful voice, discipline, and personal story resonated deeply with audiences, and he went on to win the competition, earning widespread admiration across India and abroad.
Tamang’s victory became a moment of pride for the Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities, with celebrations held in several regions. Following his Indian Idol success, he released multiple albums. His debut album, “Dhanyavad” (Thank You), featured both Nepali and Hindi songs and was released under Sony BMG. He also toured internationally, including performances in the United States, and sang for Nepali films such as “Himmat 2”, alongside fellow Indian Idol contestant Charu Semwal.
In addition to music, Tamang pursued an acting career. His performance in the Nepali film “Gorkha Paltan” was well received by audiences. In recent years, he appeared in the Indian web series “Paatal Lok” Season 2 and in Salman Khan’s film “Battle of Galwan.”
Prashant Tamang is survived by his wife and a daughter. He had been residing in Janakpuri, Delhi. According to sources, his mother-in-law was the first to learn of his death and informed his close friend and fellow Indian Idol contestant Amit Paul, who later shared the news on Instagram, after which the information became public.
With no known prior health conditions reported, Tamang’s sudden demise has left fans, colleagues, and well-wishers in deep shock and mourning.
