Gorkha — A sudden flood surged through the Budhi Gandaki River in northern Gorkha early Sunday morning, causing significant damage to riverside settlements and infrastructure. The powerful surge was accompanied by a loud rumbling sound, according to local reports.
The incident occurred in Chumnubri Rural Municipality, where a landslide is believed to have temporarily blocked a tributary of the Budhi Gandaki. Water may have accumulated behind the blockage before suddenly breaking through, triggering the flash flood. Authorities are still assessing the exact cause and extent of the incident.
Preliminary reports indicate that more than 35 houses in areas including Salleri, Bagar and Ghattikhola were swept away or damaged. Several bridges, including two suspension bridges and a motorable bridge, were also washed away. A hydropower project under construction has reportedly suffered damage.
The Flood Forecasting Section of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged people living along the Budhi Gandaki and downstream Trishuli River corridor, particularly from Benighat in Dhading toward Mugling, to remain highly alert. Residents have been advised to stay away from riverbanks and move to safer, higher ground if water levels rise.
Security personnel and local authorities have been mobilised for rescue, monitoring and damage assessment. Initial reports indicated no confirmed human casualties, although authorities are continuing to assess the situation and verify the extent of the damage.
