Supreme Court directs schools to start admissions after academic session begins
Kathmandu, Nepal – The Supreme Court of Nepal has issued an interim order directing schools to admit new students only after the academic session officially begins.
The decision comes as annual exam results have not yet been published, and essential documents, including mark sheets and other required certificates, have not been submitted, as per Education Regulations 2059, Rule 78 (1)(c). The court instructed that schools should not announce new admissions until these conditions are met.
A single bench led by Justice Bal Krishna Dhakal emphasized that admission procedures must align with the academic session, which starts every year on Baisakh 2 (mid-April). The order highlights the need for proper coordination between exam results, academic sessions, and required documentation.
The court has also directed the concerned authorities to act according to existing laws and instructed the opposing parties to submit a written response within 15 days.
Previously, on Chaitra 5, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Education Development and Human Resource Center, Sano Thimi, Bhaktapur had issued a notice stating that schools should conduct new student admissions only after annual exam results are published and the new academic session 2083 begins. However, the Supreme Court noted that some schools had announced admissions in violation of this directive.
This ruling ensures that school admissions in Nepal remain transparent, legal, and aligned with academic timelines, preventing confusion and potential disputes.
