TikTok ban removed as platform agrees to Government conditions
The government has lifted the ban on the popular social media platform TikTok, following a decision made during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday at Singha Durbar.
The ban, which had been in place since October 13, 2080, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, was removed after TikTok agreed to comply with several conditions set by the government. These conditions include mandatory registration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology as per Section 3 of the Social Media Operation Guidelines, 2080. Additionally, TikTok must designate a point of contact within Nepal to ensure proper communication and compliance.
Government spokesperson and Prithvi Subba Gurung, Minister for Communications and Information Technology, announced that the ban would be lifted once TikTok meets all the stipulated conditions and completes the registration process. He emphasized that similar requirements will apply to other social media platforms operating in Nepal, ensuring they contribute positively to the country’s development goals.
