Tribhuvan International Airport to close for 10 hours daily for 5 months
Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu will be undergoing a significant nighttime closure from today, November 8th, until March 31st, 2025. The closure, spanning 10 hours daily from 10 PM to 8 AM, is necessary to facilitate essential runway expansion, taxiway construction, and parking area upgrades.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has initiated this project to enhance the airport’s capacity and efficiency. A parallel taxiway will be constructed alongside the runway, and existing taxiways will be demolished, reconstructed, and upgraded. Additionally, a new apron will be connected to the taxiways. Three international contractors are executing this project, which is part of the airport’s master plan and carries a budget of NPR 15 billion.
To accommodate the nighttime closure, airlines operating at TIA have adjusted their flight schedules. The authority anticipates that once the upgrades are complete, aircraft movement will be smoother, and traffic congestion will be significantly reduced.
